Longtime NHL executive Brian Burke said it best when he described signing an undrafted free agent as a lot like finding a discarded wallet on the street. Most of the time there’s nothing in there, but every once in a while you’ll find a couple bucks.

Today, we’re going to look at which undrafted NCAA free agents just might carry a little NHL currency, and hope to steer clear of the ones as barren as a Blockbusters cash register in the twilight of the oughts.

We’re barely out of the gates, and it’s going to be a long season, even if the games are fewer and the teams less numerous. A lot can change between now and the campaign’s end, when many of these players will indulge the NHL teams lining up one after the other to compete for their services.
