The pride of Jyväskylä, Finland, Kemell developed in the JYP system. He put up impressive numbers for their under-16, under-18, and under-20 teams. In his draft season, Kemell played exclusively for the top JYP team in the Liiga. His 23 points in 39 games turned the heads of many scouts, especially impressive that he did that with only 15:54 total time on ice per game.

Kemell had the 17th-best all-time Liiga total points for any draft-eligible skater. If you rank by points per game with those who played at least as many games as he did
