Trade Analysis: What the Canadiens are getting in Emil Heineman

As anticipation for the Tyler Toffoli trade to Calgary grew, the expectations did too. Maybe, the Montreal Canadiens were going to land Jakob Pelletier. Or maybe even 2021’s 13th overall pick, Matt Coronato.

Instead, they received Emil Heineman. Not quite the level of name, but he was the seventh-ranked prospect in the Calgary Flames' system for a reason.

Sure, Heineman’s counting stats aren’t mind-blowing. But dig a little deeper, and his production shifts from alright to exciting. For one, he’s second on his team in goals despite playing under 12 minutes per game. Second, here’s the list of SHL players who have scored more even-strength goals per 60 this season:

  1.    Patrik Karlkvist
  2.    Max Véronneau
  3.    Oscar Möller

Yes, Heineman is fourth in the SHL in even-strength goals per 60, with a very impressive 1.51. That’s better than dozens of NHL draft picks, notable prospects, former NHLers, and top European pros. He doesn’t turn 21 until November.

Before we talk goals, we need to talk power.
