Elite Prospects Notes and Trivia
History
The story of the Atlanta Flames began in 1971. The NHL awarded an explansion franchise to Tom Cousins, the owner of Atlanta Hawks basketball franchise. The team began to play at Omni Coliseum in 1972. The team was named Flames after the burning of Atlanta during the American Civil War. Despite consistently making playoffs, the expansion franchise was plagued by low attendance, which eventually led Cousins to sell the franchise to Nelson Skalbania, who relocated the Flames to Calgary, Alberta.
The NHL returned to Atlanta in 1998 in the form of the Atlanta Thrashers. In the absence of the NHL, the market was briefly served by the Atlanta Knights of the IHL in the early 1990s.
Trivia
The team logo features a flaming A. The alternate captains of the Calgary Flames wear the flaming A on their jerseys as an homage to the team's roots in Atlanta.
